The Centre for Tibetan and Himalayan Studies

The Centre for Tibetan and Himalayan Studies (CTHS) is dedicated to the preservation and understanding of the Tibetan cultural heritage through the translation of Tibet’s classical literature, and the funding of targeted conservation and small-scale welfare projects. Over the last decade, the commercial activity of Trans Himalaya and its patrons have supported a number of CTHS projects, including the establishment of a small Tibetan research library in Crieff, the restoration of a sacred wall of stone carvings in Amdo, the reproduction of rare mural paintings in Lhasa, the education of village children in Dingri, and the welfare of young Buddhist teachers in Kham.

Through a wide-ranging network of contacts across the Tibetan plateau, CTHS facilitates individuals and organisations wishing to target funds for designated restoration work inside Tibet, and it provides a monitoring service for such projects. Among on-going activities, since 2003 CTHS and its patrons have funded a team of skilled artists in Lhasa to reproduce the entire Lukhang murals on canvas—a project that is now nearing completion. It is hoped that these new paintings will serve as a model when permission is eventually obtained to restore the dilapidated Lukhang temple; and at the same time that they will be displayed in a new environment outside Tibet, as a focal point for Tibetan cultural regeneration.

CTHS has also received grants from individuals and organisations who commission translations or new publications on Tibetan and Himalayan themes.

Gyurme Dorje was born in Edinburgh in 1950. For over forty years he has been continuously engaged in both classical and modern Tibetan studies—in India, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan; establishing Trans Himalaya in 1987 and CTHS in 2001. Gyurme holds higher degrees in Tibetan literature (PhD SOAS, 1987) and Sanskrit (MA Edin, 1971). His publications include translations from classical sources on Tibetan Buddhism, lexicography, medicine, divination, art, and ecology; as well as the Footprint guides to Tibet and Bhutan. Currently he is preparing annotated translations of the Sutra of Transcendent Perfection in Ten Thousand Lines and the Guhyagarbha Tantra Commentary from Longchen Choying Tobden Dorje’s Treasury of Sutra and Tantra.
