Destination: India

Renowned as the birthplace of Buddhism, which teaches the Middle Way avoiding extremes, India is paradoxically a land swayed by extremes - in its explosion of colour, in its social customs, economic disparities, political culture, aesthetics and philosophical systems. Indian society fascinates both on account of its disarming openness and its semblance of organised chaos.

In addition to the Himalayan enclaves of Sikkim and Ladakh, which have been listed separately, Trans Himalaya also offer enriching cultural experiences throughout the Indian subcontinent. Our particular emphasis is on the great archaeological sites of Buddhist India at Bodh Gaya, Varanasi, Rajgir, Sravasti, Vaishali and Kushinagar, which have been regenerated in recent decades through their associations with the diverse living traditions of world Buddhism.
